Family members claiming HB as joint tenants

The case example is a 29 year old who is looking for accommodation with her 52 year old mother.

If they find somewhere to rent as joint tenants they can claim HB and normally be considered liable for 50% of the rent each.  Because they would occupy the property as one household the mother could claim up to the 2 bed rate on her share of the rent adding her daughter to the application.  The daughter could also apply for HB on her share of the rent but as she is under 35 would only be entitled to the shared room rate.

If the daughter was over 35 then she could also claim the 2-bed rate including her mother as part of the household.
